Why DIY Skincare?

DIY skincare recipes are a great way to nourish skin without harsh chemicals and unknown ingredients. Our skin is our largest organ of our bodies. So, our skin is also permeable, this means that whatever is applied to our skin topically has the potential of absorbing into our bodies, and into our blood streams.
Store bought skincare products contain chemicals. The different types of chemicals depend on what skincare products are being made. Commonly found chemicals in skincare include formaldehyde, parabens, SLS, and artificial fragrances to name a few.
Ok, enough of the scary stuff. There are plenty of other reasons to make skincare homemade (and all natural). Frugality is a huge reason to make DIY skincare products! Most homemade skincare recipes can be made at a fraction of the cost of store bought versions, with leftovers for use in more recipes.
Reduce Waste by Reusing

Reuse old jars and containers to store DIY skincare recipes, to make them more eco friendly. Even if you aren’t always able to repurpose a container for your latest DIY creation, making homemade skincare recipes is still eco friendly. Just think of all the waste we’re saving by eliminating that excess packaging!
How to Make DIY Skincare Recipes Smell Good?

Artificial fragrances are in most conventional skincare products because, well, they smell good. What most people don’t realize is that artificial ingredients can disrupt our hormones and cause skin irritation.
As someone with very sensitive skin, I had one too many allergic reactions before I smartened up and started making my own skincare products!
So, how to make DIY skincare smell amazing? Essential oils! The natural alternative that is packed with other health benefits as well.
How to Start Making DIY Skincare Products

The world of DIY skincare can definitely seem overwhelming to newcomers. What are all of these weird ingredients? Where do I get them? How do I mix them? How to use them?
Then there’s always the classic question … “how much time does it take?” and of course “does it really work?”
DIY skincare products don’t have to take a long time to make. In fact, many recipes can be thrown together in little time at all. As far as efficacy goes, I have had greater success with DIY homemade skincare recipes than store bought. Far less allergic reactions and much happier skin!

When I first dipped my toes into the DIY skincare world, I remember being lost as to how to find the ingredients I needed. Well, thankfully these recipes are easy to find online and I’ve linked my most commonly used ingredients below.
- Coconut Oil
- Shea Butter
- Mango Butter (optional, but awesome)
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Sugar
- Honey
- Pink Himalayan Salt
As for DIY skincare containers, if you don’t have something to repurpose these are some of my favorite options:
Homemade Sugar Body Scrub

Homemade sugar scrubs may be the best beginner’s skincare recipe! With just sugar and coconut oil, make a natural scrub that’s effective for exfoliating and can be used on the face too.
This type of scrub can easily be customized with the essential oils of your choosing. In the recipe linked here, we talk all about how to make and use homemade scrubs.
Two Simple, All-Natural Lip Scrub Recipes

The key to soft lips may be sitting right in your pantry! With just a couple of minutes and simple ingredients, these two lip scrubs will leave lips feeling nourished in no time.

Pink Himalayan Salt Body Scrub Recipe

Got 5 minutes? This recipe is for you!
Pink Himalayan Salt and coconut oil are all you need for a luxurious scrub to leave you feeling like you’ve just had a day at the spa. This is one of our top recipes on the blog, and to think it’s so simple!
This is my Mom’s favorite recipe, with a few drops of lavender essential oil added in of course.
The full recipe can be found here as well as the benefits of using pink Himalayan salt.
DIY Whipped Body Butter

Body butter, need I say more? This recipe is literally whipped to perfection with equal parts shea butter, coconut oil, cocoa butter and sweet almond oil.
Thicker than traditional lotion, body butter is something you’ll want to store in a wide mouth jar for easy use.
The full recipe can be found here.
Homemade Shaving Cream with Aloe Vera

This may be one of my all-time favorite DIY skincare recipes. Aloe vera and coconut oil make this homemade shaving cream so nourishing, leaving skin incredibly soft. Many people who have tried this recipe have reported back saying that their skin feels so soft they can skip lotion!
In addition to aloe vera and coconut oil, shea butter and sweet almond oil are what gives this recipe it’s soft whipped texture.

Storage of DIY Skincare Products

Most DIY skincare products can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature. Because most DIY skincare products are made with ingredients that liquify in the heat, care should be taken during the summer months if you live someplace warm. I’ve been known to store my homemade deodorant in our fridge during the summer to prevent it from melting!
A note on safety…
Please do research on ingredients and be mindful of any potential allergens when making DIY skincare. When trying out a recipe for the first time, apply it to a small test area of the skin.
