WHY WE LOVE BEAN BURGERS

During the warmer months, our family loves to cook a quick dinner on the grill. When I first adopted a plant based diet I was a little perplexed on what to have as a burger substitute. Dinner prep has to be quick in our home, more on that topic here. Pre-made frozen bean burgers can get expensive, and it’s so much healthier to make them at home.

Hearty bean burgers are quick to make. When my burger supply is running low (and the boys are napping) I’ll make a batch and freeze them individually for later. Now, the next time our family is having burgers on the grill I can have one too without any prep time.

WHAT’S IN A BEAN BURGER?

Aside from beans, anything you want can be added into this recipe. Beans, onions, breadcrumbs, eggs and a variety of spices are generally what I use. Although my diet is primarily plant based, I do eat eggs and some dairy. I have made this recipe without using eggs and the burgers were still excellent, although slightly drier.

  • 2 cans (16 oz) black beans drained and rinsed
  • 1 small onion
  • 4 cloves of garlic (we used minced in a jar)
  • 1 cup of seasoned breadcrumbs
  • 2 eggs (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp cilantro

HOW TO CONSTRUCT A TASTY BEAN BURGER

The inspiration behind these hearty bean burgers comes from this original recipe, which can be found here.

After making several different batches with different modifications, these the current directions I have been following to make about 8 slider-sized burgers.

My kids love to mash the beans for me! If you have little helpers in the kitchen, they may love it too.

  1. Preheat the oven to 375, or preheat the grill.
  2. Mash the beans until they no longer look like beans, and become paste.
  3. Add chopped onion, minced garlic and stir.
  4. Add the remaining ingredients and stir/mix well. I find it best to mix by hand.
  5. Using either your hands or a burger press, create patties.
  6. If cooking in the oven, apply coconut oil to the tin-foil lining of the sheet pan these will be cooked on. Cook 10 minutes each side.
  7. After the burgers have cooled, they can be wrapped individually and frozen for easy access to a healthy, plant-based meal in minutes.

NOTES

This recipe is fully customizable. If you do not eat eggs, they can be omitted without any issues. However the burgers will be slightly drier.

Experiment with different spices, each time I have made this recipe I have done something slightly different and always loved the result!

If you do not have seasoned breadcrumbs, plain can be used and spices such as Mrs. Dash are a great replacement.

I recommend letting the mixture sit for a few minutes before throwing it in the oven as the flavors combine together in the breadcrumbs when it has a moment to rest before cooking.
