After spending the majority of the weekend outdoors with the kids and in the garden, I noticed something uncomfortable. My lips were chapped with that burning tight feeling, but already? It’s only September?! The weather changed rapidly from warm to cool, dry air with a breeze. This cooler air did a number on my lips, and so I knew it was time to mix up some simple, all-natural lip scrubs.

These two simple, all-natural lip scrub recipes were very fun to experiment with. After a single application I noticed an immediate difference. My lips felt soothed and much more smooth (and soft too).
What is Lip Scrub?

Lip scrubs are gentle scrubs used to exfoliate our lips. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells, and although sounds tough it can actually be done very gently.

In both of these all-natural lip scrub recipes shared below, our “exfoliant” of choice is sugar. I chose sugar because of it’s gentle exfoliation properties, and because it’s something most of us have in our pantries. When it comes to lip scrub recipes, sugar is essentially tons of tiny little scrubbing granules that will gently rub into all of the little lines in our lips and exfoliate very effectively.
Why exfoliate your lips?

We learned earlier that exfoliating removes the top layer of dead skin cells. This process reveals glowing, smooth skin underneath. When we exfoliate our lips, we are left with much smoother, softer lips! Some people may prefer to exfoliate before applying lipstick, to avoid any bumpiness or to help the lipstick to glide on better with more even coverage.
If you have chapped lips, both of the recipes that I am sharing today will be soothing. It’s important to gently remove that layer of dry, irritated skin and care for the fresh skin below!

Regardless of why you choose to use lip scrub, I can trust that after one use you will be hooked. Lip scrub is something you didn’t know you needed, until you’ve tried it for yourself. Most homemade skincare products are simple to make, but homemade lip scrub may be the easiest. Using regular pantry items, make your own all-natural lip scrub in 5 minutes (or less).
A quick word on safety, I do not recommend using any type of lip scrub if you have cuts or open sores/wounds on your lips.
How to use All-Natural Lip Scrub

- To use homemade all-natural lip scrub, simply apply the mixture all over your lips.
- Using your fingers or a warm washcloth, gently scrub your lips in a circular pattern.
- After a moment or two, rinse with warm water.
- Follow up with your favorite chapstick.
- If adding lipstick is your next step, give it a go!

My favorite time to use lip scrub is at the end of the day. I use a washcloth and sweet almond oil with warm water to remove any makeup I’ve worn that day. After my makeup has been removed, I use a homemade lip scrub recipe and follow up with some moisturizer before heading to bed.
Recipe 1: All-Natural Soothing Lip Scrub Recipe

To make this recipe, you will need:
- 1 1/2 TBSP Sugar: any type of sugar will do. I have plenty of white, granulated sugar from making Hummingbird Nectar so that is what I used for these recipes.
- 1 TBSP Honey: when possible, I prefer to use local honey from our friend’s farm. But any type of honey will do!
- Small bowl for mixing
- Container for storage. Pictured here, I am using small vintage glass jars. If you need containers (for yourself or to give out as gifts) I recommend the ones linked at the beginning of this bullet point.

In a small bowl, mix 1 TBSP of honey with 1 1/2 TBSP sugar. Continue to mix until well incorporated.

Told you it was easy!
I find this recipe to be very soothing on chapped skin. My lips instantly felt better, and stayed smooth and soft for days to come.

Honey is excellent for skin for a number of reasons. Honey is an all-natural antioxidant with anti-bacterial properties. Many homemade face masks and other all-natural skin treatments call for honey. In addition, honey is a moisturizer and humectant – meaning it is used to help reduce moisture loss. Definitely worthwhile to include in a lip scrub, especially when battling chapped lips.

Feeling chapped? These simple, all-natural lip scrub recipes can be made in minutes and will have your lips feeling healthier in no time.
Ingredients
- 1 TBSP Honey
- 1 1/2 TBSP Sugar
Instructions
In a small bowl, mix 1 TBSP of honey with 1 1/2 TBSP sugar. Continue to mix until well incorporated.
Recipe 2: All-Natural Moisturizing Lip Scrub Recipe

To make this recipe, you will need:
- 1 TBSP Coconut Oil
- 2 TBSP Sugar (same as above, I used white granulated sugar)
- Small bowl for mixing
- Container for storage

Coconut oil is solid when cool and liquid when warm. To make this easier to mix, consider softening coconut oil in the microwave for a couple of seconds before mixing with sugar.
Mix 1 TBSP coconut oil with 2 TBSP sugar until well incorporated, then store in a small container or use immediately.

I love this recipe because of it’s hydrating effects. Immediately after washing this lip scrub off, lips feel soft and as if you just applied chapstick. Coconut is known for it’s moisturizing benefits, and our lips are no exception. If you browse through our library of homemade skincare products, you’ll find that coconut oil is used in nearly every one of them. Coconut oil also contains anti-inflammatory properties, and anti-microbial properties too!
