Recently I shared that I had been dipping my toes into the world of DIY hair care products, and shared my Fermented Rice Water Hair Treatment Recipe! If you’ve already read that post, you may recall how we discussed the benefits of rosemary for hair growth. In today’s post I am sharing my homemade rosemary water leave in hair treatment which promotes hair growth while leaving hair feeling super soft.

Have you ever used those leave-in conditioner type sprays that are supposed to leave hair feeling soft and shiny? They typically work quite well, but some of them can get a bit expensive. Not to mention all of the chemicals and other cringe-worthy ingredients in that stuff! The only ingredients you’ll need for make your own can be found right in the herb garden, well and the watering can!

WHAT IS ROSEMARY WATER?

Rosemary water is pretty self-explanatory, but is the result of cooking rosemary and water for several hours on low heat and then discarding the solids and retaining the water. Rosemary breaks down in the water, making what is essentially a tea for our hair. The rosemary infused water is beneficial for our hair and scalp in a number of different ways. Let’s learn a little more about this below.

WHY IS ROSEMARY WATER BENEFICIAL?

  • Avoid or Prevent Dandruff: rosemary water can help to prevent dandruff by nourishing and moisturizing the scalp. Rosemary water is also beneficial for itchy or dry scalps.
  • Promote Hair Growth: rosemary water is best known for it’s abilities to boost hair growth through increasing circulation within the scalp. Clinical studies have been done and proven that rosemary is as effective as Minoxidil (the ingredient in Rogaine) in hair regrowth over a period of time. Yes, I’m serious, give it a Google!
  • Softer, Shinier Hair: even just after the first application of rosemary water, I noticed how soft my hair felt once it was dried! This is definitely a great swap for store bought leave-in conditioners or leave-in shine boosters.

Hair may not feel any different while it is still wet with rosemary water, but as soon as the hair starts to dry it will feel softer and be shinier! I was personally surprised at how soft the rosemary water made my hair feel, and now this will be a staple DIY hair care recipe in our farmhouse.

LET’S MAKE HOMEMADE ROSEMARY WATER!

Take a handful of fresh rosemary sprigs and throw them right into the crock pot. We are lucky enough to have a rosemary plant that has survived several years with us, and that is what we use to make our rosemary water. It doesn’t matter if the rosemary is very woody, because all of the rosemary solids will be discarded later anyway.

Place the rosemary at the bottom of the crock pot, then add just enough water to cover the rosemary. Close the lid and cook the mixture on low for about 4 hours, mixing occasionally.

Once about 4 hours have passed, strain out the rosemary and discard. The rosemary water should be allowed to cool until it can be safely handled. Once cooled, carefully pour into a glass spray bottle for use on hair.

HOW TO USE LEAVE-IN ROSEMARY WATER HAIR TREATMENT

Homemade rosemary water hair treatments are best used immediately after showering. The frequency of use will vary from person to person, much like the fermented rice water. I would recommend trying 2-3 applications per week.

After the shower, spray rosemary water onto clean wet hair. Some folks frown upon brushing wet hair, especially those who are prone to breakage. I personally have curly hair that turns into a giant snarl if I brush it dry, so I will brush after applying the rosemary water spray. Brushing after spraying will ensure the rosemary water is thoroughly worked through all of the hair and may also help with some tangles too.

After applying the rosemary water spray you may proceed as usual, this treatment should not be rinsed out. Be sure to spray onto the scalp with extra emphasis on any problem areas. Just as we learned earlier, rosemary is beneficial for the scalp and hair follicles so it’s important to ensure the rosemary water has gotten onto the scalp. Massaging the rosemary water into the scalp is especially helpful!

Here’s my usual disclosure … as with any DIY recipe, it is a good practice to proceed with caution if you have skin sensitivities. Always do a small test spot first. I personally have extremely sensitive skin and have not had any issues, but everyone is different.

STORAGE OF ROSEMARY WATER

The best place to store rosemary water between uses is in a tightly closed spray bottle in the fridge. This mixture should last 1-2 weeks in the refrigerator. If possible, allow it to warm up a little bit before use (brrr)!
