WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

This homemade body scrub is all-natural, and acts as an exfoliant and moisturizer in one. You know how I love multi-tasking! For this recipe, I use ingredients that you most likely have on hand in your kitchen. If you need to go out and purchase these ingredients, it won’t break the bank! Multiple batches of homemade lemon sugar body scrub can be made for about $10.

Store-bought body scrubs can get pricey. They usually contain a great deal of chemicals, and also come in a disposable container.  Not the best if you are thinking about living more simply and eco-friendly. Homemade scrubs can be stored in whatever type of container you have on hand, so if you are a jar hoarder like I am, you’re in luck! But seriously, I can’t get rid of a nice glass jar. If you choose to use essential oils to scent your body scrub, it’s best to store the scrub in a glass container.

ALL-NATURAL INGREDIENTS

  • Sugar: during the summer months we use a ton of sugar for our DIY homemade hummingbird nectar.  Hummingbird nectar has to be changed every couple of days, so it’s pretty often that I’m in the sugar jar. Widely used in the natural beauty world, sugar is an excellent exfoliant for your skin. Sugar proves to be gentile, yet effective at removing dead skin cells.
  • Coconut Oil: in our farmhouse, we use coconut oil in everything that we cook.  I primarily cook on cast iron pans, and use this oil before and after each meal to prevent sticking. We also use it whenever a recipe calls for cooking oil. Outside of the kitchen, coconut oil is very hydrating to skin (and hair). During winter, I like to use plain coconut oil as a moisturizer when my skin is very dry.
  • Lemon: for this particular homemade sugar scrub, I chose to scent it with lemon. Aside from it’s beautiful scent, lemons are rich in vitamin C which has many benefits for skin. Lemons are such a versatile fruit! They are often used in our home for cleaning, for a list of my favorite all-natural cleaning recipes grab a copy of my free e-book “Cleaning Naturally” here.

BENEFITS FOR SKIN

Vitamin C (found in lemons) can help even out skin tone. It’s also packed with antioxidants, to help fight against free radicals.

While this scrub will leave your body feeling super soft, I don’t recommend putting it on your face. Sometimes body scrubs can be a little too abrasive for use on more sensitive skin, such as our faces.

MIX IT UP!

One of the best features of this body scrub recipe is that it’s fully customizable. Not feeling like lemons? Swap the lemon out of this recipe and add your favorite essential oils to create a scent that is perfect for you.

I have used lavender essential oil in body scrubs time and time again. It remains one of my favorites, right next to the lemon.

HOW TO MAKE IT

all-natural, DIY sugar scrub
  1. Combine sugar and coconut oil in a medium sized mixing bowl. *Note that coconut oil is a solid below about 78 degrees, and turns to liquid above that temperature. If your coconut oil is solid, simply mix this by hand. The warmth of your hands will help to thoroughly mix these ingredients without melting the sugar.
  2. Add lemon juice and zest.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Add to jar and throw a custom label on top!

HOW TO USE BODY SCRUBS

Think about your last pedicure. Your feet were soaked in warm water, before the nail technician started beautifying your feet. Exfoliants work best on damp or wet skin that has been soaked for at least a few minutes.

When you are just about ready to get out of the shower or bath is the perfect time to use your body scrub. Your skin has been softened by the warm water, so the dead skin cells can come off much more easily.

  1. Step out of the running water and apply the body scrub. Don’t worry about using too much, I really use a ton!
  2. Rub the mixture in until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Rinse off thoroughly, but don’t scrub all of the coconut oil off!
  4. Pat dry. This makes a huge difference when moisturizing skin. When your shower or bath is over, use your bath towel to pat yourself dry as opposed to wiping. This will help to absorb just the excess water, and leave the coconut oil on your skin for continued moisturizing benefits.
