WHY USE PINK HIMALAYAN SALT AND SUGAR IN A HOMEMADE BODY SCRUB RECIPE?

Pink Himalayan salt is an excellent ingredient to use in homemade skincare because of it’s excellent exfoliation properties. We made a plain PINK HIMALAYAN SALT SCRUB over on the blog a few months ago that explains more in depth about the benefits of using this incredible ingredient. Long story short, pink Himalayan salt has minerals beneficial for our bodies. These minerals are absorbed by our skin when we use the scrub, so along with it’s great exfoliation properties this is a win-win!

On the other end of the spectrum, sugar is a gentile exfoliator. Sugar is widely used in homemade skincare recipes just like this one – HOMEMADE BODY SCRUB. Sugar is widely loved in the DIY skincare world because it is both gentile and effective. Exfoliating skin then dissolving away, sugar has a permanent place on my DIY skincare shelf.

WHY PUT SUGAR AND PINK HIMALAYAN SALT TOGETHER?

With this scrub, we wanted the best of both worlds. As we just learned, sugar will gently exfoliate the skin before rinsing away. This allows the pink Himalayan salt extra time on our bodies (don’t forget we are absorbing those beneficial minerals through our skin). Pink Himalayan salt gives a little extra polish to banish dead skin and leave soft, glowing skin. Once rinsed away, it is noticeable that the coconut oil has moisturized skin during an invigorating exfoliation session.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MINT FOR SKIN?

For those of us who have spearmint in our yards, it can often take over. In addition to drinking cucumber-mint infused water, why not incorporate it into our skincare routines too?

Mint leaves are soothing to skin, while providing some exfoliation benefits as well. Exfoliation is important to remove dead skin cells. Once dead skin cells are removed, the skin underneath is softer, smoother and healthier. Spearmint is often used to cleanse the skin because it contains salicylic acid and antibacterial properties as well. Additionally, spearmint has been known to help clear acne!

For the purpose of this post, we are using two different varieties of spearmint which grow in our back yard. Before plucking something from nature to ingest or apply it to skin, be certain you know exactly what you are harvesting and working with.

HOW TO GROW AND HARVEST MINT IN YOUR BACKYARD

When my husband and I moved into our first home, he planted some mint in the yard. The purpose? So that when the grass was cut, the yard would smell good.

And the yard did smell good, and the mint grew everywhere! When we sold our first home and moved out to the farmhouse, we were pleased to see spearmint growing throughout the rhubarb plants. We currently grow two different varieties of spearmint on the property, and they are both lovely.

Spearmint varieties are hardy up to USDA Zone 5. Once planted, expect spearmint to grow each year and to spread. In some instances, mint can turn into a bit of a nuisance! Mint can be chopped with the lawnmower (even every week), cut and put into a vase where it will root, or dug up and shared with friends. Mint is a nearly indestructible plant.

HOW TO MAKE A PINK HIMALAYAN SALT AND SUGAR BODY SCRUB USING FRESH MINT FROM YOUR YARD

ingredients needed to make body scrub including pink himalayan salt mint and sugar

Snip a few sprigs of spearmint and put them into your food processor. It is not necessary to remove the leaves from the stems, the entire spring may be used for this recipe. I used two sprigs to make this recipe, but you may need to use more or less depending on your minty preference.

The food processor should mince the mint up into very small pieces, then set them aside.

Measure out 1/4 C of pink Himalayan salt, sugar and coconut oil. Combine salt, sugar and mint in a mixing bowl and mix together until well combined. Add the coconut oil and mix until fully incorporated. I often find it easiest to mix the coconut oil in with my hands!

Add 7-10 drops of grapefruit essential oil for scent, or leave the scrub as-is.

HOW TO USE A BODY SCRUB

Homemade body scrubs should be used during a shower or bath, after the skin has had a few moments to soften up under the water. Apply a small amount of scrub to the skin and gently rub it in. Be sure to rinse thoroughly, especially because little bits of mint may remain on the skin!

As with any skin product, homemade or not, it’s best practice to try the scrub on a small test spot of the skin before diving right in.

STORAGE OF HOMEMADE BODY SCRUB

Homemade pink Himalayan salt and sugar body scrub with mint is best stored in a sealed jar. Once sealed, the scrub can stay in the bathroom until the body scrub has been all used up (about a couple of weeks). If you’re anything like me, the scrub won’t last that long because you will use it up so quickly!
